The vibe near the pond at Sunset Park

Female mallard preening.

If you’re a Sunset Park newbie, just follow the sound of honking ducks to locate the pond. It’s only about 100 yards from the main entrance on Sunset Road.

When it was my first time there, I noted that the pond smelled like the ocean. It was cool and damp by the ledge, as if seaside. In the distance, I even spotted a man fly fishing.

The clucking noises near the pond were soothing. It was humorous when the ducks all quacked in chorus. Perhaps territorial disputes? It ensued shortly after about a dozen or so Canada geese swooped down to the water and staked out spots.

I watched as an American coot dunked its head through the water surface, then disappeared altogether, coming up chomping seconds later. When it emerged, it made a splash as if it were a rubber ball springing to the surface.

The coot then began gabbing to itself, perhaps muttering about a lack of personal space. Just then 2 snow geese and a mallard cruised by in proximity.
